Following the release of their debut EP “Anxious Body” last year, Wilmette are back with their self-titled sophomore EP.
The EP opens up with “Show And Tell,” which brings harder-hitting instrumentals and a blend of clean and unclean vocals right away. The vocals quickly grabbed my attention and continued to keep me captivated throughout the entire song, from the impressive cleans in the memorable chorus to the more aggressive vocals in the bridge. The lead single “Adderall” brings instantly memorable riffs and melodies in the intro and first verse, and although the pre-chorus is heavier, the chorus that follows combines the melody and aggression in this band’s sound very well. There’s also a slight time signature change during the harder-hitting ending, where both the vocals and instrumentals put on strong performances. “Close Enough To Closure” brings lots of energy and catchy composition all throughout, from the riffs in the intro to the melodies in the chorus. The vocals in the second verse really blew me away upon first listen, as they delivered an emotional performance that showcases the vocalist’s impressive range, and the harsher vocals return in the bridge before a riff-driven breakdown.
“Rancho Cucamonga” brings catchy melodies and riffs early on, and the instrumentals take a slight step back during the first verse, letting the clean and unclean vocals shine before the song’s big chorus, while more aggressive vocals take the lead during most of the bridge, accompanied by harder-hitting instrumentals. “Alchemy,” which is probably my favorite song out of the singles from this EP, is filled with energy, and the impressive vocals quickly stood out to me once again. Closing this EP out is “All You Are Is All You’ll Ever Be,” and it shares some similarities with some of the previous tracks. It also quickly brings catchy, upbeat instrumentation and showcases both the clean and unclean vocals in the verses that follow. The cleaner vocals put on an impressive performance with some very catchy melodies in the softer pre-chorus as the song leads up to its equally as catchy chorus, where they continue to stand out, and the bridge is softer as well, aside from the harder-hitting drums, which really help build up that section of the song to the final chorus. With many impressive performances and standout moments throughout, Wilmette’s self-titled EP is an incredible sophomore effort. "wilmette" will be released tomorrow, september 25th, 2020. listen to the latest single "rancho cucamonga" here:
