Following the release of their singles “On Love” and “On Loss” last year, Northwoods have released their latest EP, titled “What Binds You.”
The EP starts off with the introductory track “The Sound Of Walking Away.” Most of the vocals and instrumentals come in about a minute into the song, instantly bringing emotional and captivating performances. The melodies on here are pretty good as well, and really grab my attention as the song builds up to its huge, hard hitting chorus before it ends. The lead single “Everything Blue”is up next, bringing another solid vocal performance, energetic instrumentation, and a little bit of aggression here and there during the pre-chorus and bridge. “Haunt” is very similar, also bringing plenty of energy and a little bit of aggression throughout, as well as catchy melodies and instrumentals from the moment it starts. Second single “Blank Space” starts off the second half of this EP, and it was a pretty big standout for me on this release. It’s more midtempo in comparison to the tracks before it, and combines the various influences in the band’s sound. The melodies throughout the song are great, especially in the memorable chorus, and the instrumentation gets to shine during the harder hitting bridge later on in the track. The darker guitar and bass riffs that open “Love Alone” foreshadow a primarily aggressive first verse, while there’s more of a mix of melody and aggression in the pre-chorus and chorus, and the softer bridge is much more melodic. Closing out the EP is “Coda,” which is also a lot slower than the rest of these tracks. The first half of the song is a lot softer, and the additional vocal harmonies in the first chorus really emphasize the vocal performance in that section, but the song becomes a lot harder hitting around the bridge. From the variety of influences to the interesting performances, "What Binds Us" is a strong EP from Northwoods. "what binds you" is available now. listen to the ep here:
