Emo/punk quartet Bayside have been around for just over two decades now, and have still been hard at work consistently making new music to follow up their latest LP, 2019’s “Interrobang.” The first glimpse at the band’s newest material comes in the form of their recently released EP, “The Red EP.”
The EP kicks off with “Strangest Faces,” which feels very fitting to be on a release coming out in the middle of October, given that Halloween is right around the corner. The song has an overall darker timbre and the haunting lyrics match very well (“I have seen the strangest faces, yellow teeth and scary eyes / It turns out they've been there all my life / It's hard to find a friendly face when you've got nothing left to sell /Looks like Heaven, why's it hot as Hell?”)
“Good Advice” contrasts a bit from its opener, bringing a quicker tempo and being performed in a major key as opposed to minor. This anthemic track contains some very catchy riffs from start to finish, as well as a chorus that’s stuck with me since I first hit ‘play’ on the track, and it’s stayed in consistent rotation on my Spotify On Repeat playlist. Lyrically, the band has stated that it is centered around someone who dies at their office job, However, upon looking at the lyrics, I also see it as a fairly reflective track. The person narrating the song could also be looking back on their life, analyzing all the choices they’ve made throughout it, and searching for guidance and “good advice” on how to live life to the fullest (“Someday you’ll die, but for now, enjoy the ride / I’ll see you when I see you on the other side”). “Just Like Home” wraps things up. Similarly to the track prior to it, it opens with some catchy instrumentals, which only get more impressive later on in the song, most notably another guitar solo. The bridge also contains a vocal performance that I felt was one of the best on the whole EP and another major highlight of the release. “The Red EP” contains three magnificent tracks from Bayside that will have fans eagerly awaiting what comes next from the group. "THE RED EP" IS AVAILABLE NOW. LISTEN TO IT HERE:
