Four Stars, once again, made their way into the scene with their latest single, "Small Hands, Small Spaces."
The single reflects on the struggles of anxiety and finally breaking free from the negative headspace. Aida Ahmed, the vocalist, discusses the song and its emotions behind it. Ahmed states “The lyrics to this song is the release to all the social anxiety I experience in my day to day. I often used to feel terrible about having to cancel plans with friends/family because my anxiety got the best of me, despite knowing I just needed time to get in the right headspace.” All in all, "Small Hands, Small Spaces" shows a deeper understanding of someone suffering through anxiety, but finding an escape out.
The single starts off strong and delves into the complex emotion of anxiety. The subtle sounds of the drums and guitar add to the feeling of loneliness. The music video for Small Hands, Small Spaces shows anxiety as a dark force following you around and letting the negative thoughts get to you. Throughout the single, what can be heard is questioning oneself and how they’re letting their emotions override them. On top of that, there is the reliable moment of trying not to use one's mental health as an excuse for their struggles. Often times, we struggle with coping with mental health that an excuse for it seems wrong or selfish. In reality, it’s not. Just like in the single, we’re trying to be better for ourselves and everyday we’re improving. Even if we’re held back, we still fight for what we love. In the end, anxiety doesn’t defeat us when we’re doing the things we love. Four Stars not only put out an awakening single, but also an emotional track. Usually, many individuals are afraid to speak about mental health. But, in turn, it helps bring awareness and helps others not feel alone in their struggles. While listening to the single, I did relate to the feeling of trying to be social, yet still finding myself anti-social. Anxiety is something I’ve struggled with my whole life and listening to "Small Hands, Small Spaces" gave me the reassurance that I needed. I’m very excited to hear what's to come from Four Stars!
