Over the course of the last few years, The Last Martyr has been releasing a handful of singles, all of which have led up to the release of their debut EP, titled “Purgatory.”
“Freaking Out” opens with furious riffs and drumbeats that show the band’s metalcore influences right off the bat. The verse brings some pretty catchy melodies, while the whispered vocals put on an intriguing performance in the pre-chorus as the track leads up to its huge chorus. The bridge brings a mix of sung and screamed vocals and highlights what’s to come from the overall sound of the rest of this EP.
“Hindsight” is led by energetic riffs that make the song very fun to listen to from the moment you first hit play. The softer verses puts a spotlight on the vocals, and more instrumentals join back in not long afterward to prepare for the chorus. The later sections are some of the song’s major highlights, as the bass becomes much more prominent during the second verse, and the shouted vocals during the breakdown really grabbed my attention. Lyrically, the song talks about coming to the realization that someone has treated you badly and manipulated you, and cutting that person out of your life, depicted in lines such as “And in the clarity, it stings a lot like hindsight/ Play it all in vain and wonder, how did we slowly descend? / You got into my head, I thought that I’d know better.” “Out of Time” leans a little more towards the alternative rock and post-hardcore side rather than metalcore, shown through the extremely catchy melodies in the song’s anthemic intro and chorus, and the vocals deliver an extremely impressive performance towards the end, reaching some higher notes. “Like a Ghost” brings back the heavy guitar riffs in the intro, while the lead guitar and some softer vocals lead the verses, but the aforementioned riffs make a comeback in the pre-chorus. While the song is more melodic vocally, the instrumentals once again display the band’s heavier side, and this track is another solid example of the sound on this EP. “Afterglow” has a groovy rhythm, driven primarily by the bass and drums, which quickly pair up with the aggressive guitar riffs to finish out the intro. The bass in particular stands out throughout the track, bringing some really catchy riffs to the table, and the track overall blends elements of metalcore and nu-metal to create an interesting closer. With “Purgatory,” The Last Martyr mixes influences from various styles of rock and metal to create an entertaining debut. "PURGATORY" IS AVAILABLE NOW. LISTEN TO THE EP HERE:
