I initially discovered Better Anyway with the songs that they released earlier this year, and several months later, the Ohio-based pop-punk/alternative rock band impressed me even more with “Bury Me," which made me curious to check out their new EP, "Low, But Looking Up."
Catchy instrumentals drive the upbeat rhythm of the opening track, “Stay Away.” The vocals quickly stood out to me when they first came in, as well as in the bridge and final chorus, where they added some extra emotion to the track. Pounding drums drive the hard-hitting intro and verses of “Afterthought,” and the guitars help build that track up to its chorus, where the slightly shouted vocals put on another performance that really had my attention. “I Can’t Say This To Your Face” begins on a much slower and softer note with some cleaner guitars, and the softer vocals match perfectly, giving the large majority of this song a more relaxed and laid-back vibe. The bridge and final chorus are where the track gets bigger and better, with harder-hitting instrumentals accompanying some much louder (and at first, much more aggressive) vocals.
“Find You There” instantly bursts with energy, with faster-paced instrumentals accompanying the vocals as they deliver some of the catchiest melodies on the entire EP, especially in the song’s chorus. “Stargazer” is a bit similar to most of ‘I Can’t Say This To Your Face,” as it’s also much slower and softer, driven by an acoustic guitar. While it’s a simpler track and I don’t have too much else to pinpoint about it, it’s still a pretty good song and, much like the aforementioned third track, it also brings a nice change of pace for this EP. The EP concludes with “Bury Me,” which immediately picks the pace right back up. The vocals stand out a lot during the chorus of this track (which I believe is one of the best on the EP), delivering passion-filled performances that showcase his impressive vocal range. With “Low, But Looking Up,” Better Anyway delivers a captivating EP with five tracks that show off their blend of pop-punk and alternative, with a lot of memorable performances, melodies, and instrumentals found throughout. "LOW, BUT LOOKING UP" IS AVAILABLE NOW. LISTEN TO THE EP HERE:
