REVIEWS
A few months back, I discovered Zola Simone through her single “What It Feels Like.” Upon its release, I couldn’t wait to hear the remainder of her new EP, “Flower.”
The dreamy vocal harmonies and reverbed guitars in “Unsaid” create a beautiful opening for the EP, and the track begins the story that unfolds throughout the entire release. This track in particular touches on the connection between two romantic partners and the passion shared between them. The aforementioned “What It Feels Like” carries a pretty similar theme, celebrating LGBTQ+ relationships and detailing the euphoria and infatuation that comes with the “honeymoon phase” of a romantic relationship. The uptempo rhythm and irresistible melodies immediately had my attention from the moment I first heard it.
“Soaked” contains another unforgettable vocal hook that becomes the primary refrain in the track’s choruses. The lyrics of the track show someone coming to the realization that the relationship may not work out, and how it feels trying to keep the relationship afloat up until that point (“I can’t breathe with my head underwater, I can’t stay afloat and it’s only getting harder / What’s left to do but surrender? Going down with you”) “Don’t Matter” focuses more on the act of the relationship ending, as well as the immediate aftermath and the inevitable heartbreak that comes along with it. (“We could sit and argue about who broke whose heart first, but that don’t really matter, it just matters that it hurts”). Musically, the vocals are a main focal point of the track, incorporating some harmonies that really stood out and feeling reminiscent of “Unsaid” in that aspect. The EP concludes with the short, but sweet “Blooming Again.” The lyrics show someone finding a sense of peace, beginning to heal from the pain the breakup caused, and moving on to a new chapter (“The colors align, bursting with petals in my mind / I don’t know the end, I have will to start again”). Each track on “Flower” displays Zola Simone’s prowess as a musician and incorporates multiple different influences into the mix. Collectively, the tracks do a great job of telling the story of this relationship, and the EP as a whole is brilliant. "FLOWER" IS AVAILABLE NOW. LISTEN TO THE EP HERE:
