Crooked Teeth have released their third EP, titled “Honey.”
The EP starts off strongly with what is probably my favorite song on it, “Hate Me.” The hooks and melodies all throughout the songs are extremely catchy, and the energetic instrumentals help emphasize the upbeat and happy vibe that the song has. The title track, “Honey,” is a bit slower and softer with some simple drums and guitar leading the verses, but the harder instrumentals kick in during the chorus, which is easily one of the biggest highlights of the track.
“Absent” mixes both the rock elements that are a staple in their sound (mainly in the harder hitting verses with emotional vocals) and the more pop leaning elements they’re using to experiment throughout this EP (shown in the subtle pitched vocals and the more simplistic instrumentals in the intro). The track that follows, “You And Me (Whatever),” is probably the most pop leaning song on this whole entire EP, with the verses being led by what seems like electronic drums and the chorus easily getting stuck in my head. That chorus, however, is a lot more hard hitting and the guitars really kick in during that section of the song. The EP concludes with “Broken Bones,” which finishes out the release just about as strongly as “Hate Me” opens it up. This is another track that I feel mixes the various elements of this EP, as the punk leaning guitars and harder drums are combined with some subtle electronics and more emotional vocals that match the darker and (mostly) rock-influenced instrumentals. Overall, I really liked this EP. Although the overall sound is definitely a little bit different from the band’s previous material, I like how they’re starting to experiment a bit more and incorporate some new influences into their sound.
