Since 2018, UK-based rock band Delaire The Liar have released their debut EP and a plethora of singles, and the band spent 2021 leading up to the release of their sophomore EP, “EAT YOUR OWN.”
“NO ENTRY” starts the EP with a brooding piano part before the vocals come in, delivering dark lyrics: “How do you know if your kid’s at risk? How do you notice? / And if they want so bad to be somewhere else, they finally kill themselves / I couldn’t see the signs, dressed in red and white / I couldn’t recognize how hard it had been just to keep yourself alive.” Between those lyrics and the instrumentation accompanying them, the song makes a haunting and powerful opener.
“FURNACE” instantly grabbed my attention with the vocal performances in the intro, and while the softer verses contrast from that section, those captivating vocals and instrumentals return in the song’s chorus, creating strong dynamics in the song structure. The vocalist offers an extremely emotive performance, which is definitely another highlight of the track. “NO THANKS” also has some more laid-back sections in its first verse, but the pre-chorus takes it up a notch, as charismatic vocals lead up to the song’s anthemic chorus. “HALLOWEEN” is led by dramatic instrumentals as it builds up to yet another massive chorus. The vocal performance is easily another highlight of the track, and the vocal harmonies are a nice addition to that aforementioned chorus. “NO ACCIDENT” contrasts quite a bit from the rest of the record with its slower tempo and cleaner guitars. The bridge and outro contain lots of emotion through both the vocals and instrumentals, ending the track on a hard-hitting note. The band’s punk and alternative rock influences return on the EP’s final track, “DOG,” The vocals have more grit and are slightly more aggressive, and that aggression and frustration conveyed through the performances makes the track a strong closer for the release. “EAT YOUR OWN” shows Delaire The Liar’s distinct sound within the alt rock scene through gripping performances on each of its six tracks, further proving why the band is one to watch in this new year. "EAT YOUR OWN" IS AVAILABLE NOW. LISTEN TO THE EP HERE:
