Beartooth have released their latest record, titled “Disease.”
Beartooth is a band that I’ve considered myself a pretty big fan of for a pretty long time. I enjoyed their debut record, and a majority of their sophomore record as well. With that in mind, I had high hopes for this record. On first listen, I thought the singles were pretty good, but after hearing the entire record, those singles definitely grew on me and I found myself pretty impressed with the remaining tracks.
Opening track “Greatness Or Death” is one that took me and many other fans by surprise. It starts out with an acoustically driven intro and a catchy vocal hook that lures the listener in, and then, almost out of nowhere, the harder instrumentation kicks in and brings some very interesting composition. The title track, “Disease,” is a pretty powerful one. Though it is mostly melodic, there’s a huge chorus and some aggression in the breakdown. From a lyrical standpoint, the song touches on the topic of mental health, which I admire. “Fire” is definitely on the more aggressive side compared to the previous two tracks. This one brings quite a bit of energy and a lot of heavier elements after the intro. With the combination of harsher vocals and furious, fast-paced instrumentals (aside from the more melodic chorus), this track reminds me of something that would’ve come off of Beartooth’s debut record. “You Never Know” is another more melodic one, and probably the biggest standout of the singles from this record. The more emotional vocals fit well with this song, as the lyrics on here portray that emotion well. This song has some interesting composition, and I can say the same about the following track, “Bad Listener.” I loved the darker instrumentals, especially the guitars, and thought the breakdown was pretty captivating. The instrumentals are also pretty aggressive, and the vocals on here match that, with the vocal performance on here being almost entirely screamed and probably the most aggressive one on this record. “Afterall” is probably one of the most unique tracks on this entire record as far as sound goes, and shows the band incorporating some different influences. It’s another more melodic track, but the darker instrumentals are still there and help make the song stand out even more than it already does. “Manipulation” is a pretty catchy track and one of my favorites of the singles. Though I don’t have a ton to say about it and don’t think it stands out as much as some of the other songs on this record, I still think it’s a solid track. “Enemy” has a good mix of singing and screaming, and this is pretty evident in the verses. The cleaner vocals mixed in amidst the screams add a bit of variety to the verses and that combination makes those sections of the song more engaging. “Believe” is next up, and it is by far one of my favorite tracks on the entire record. It sounds almost like a slightly heavier pop punk song, and it shows the band really stepping out of their comfort zone to try something new, but doing it so well. It’s yet another melodic track, but it’s extremely catchy and one of the most memorable tracks on this album. “Infection” is one of quite a few tracks on here with a good mix of singing and screaming. During moments with more clean vocals, the melodies are catchy once again, and when the song gets aggressive, it gets very aggressive. “Used and Abused” is one I felt a bit criticaltowards because of the production on it. I feel that the production makes it harder for the instrumentation and vocals to stand out in some parts of the song, aside from the chorus, where everything really gets to shine. Aside from that, the song is pretty good. The album closes with the track “Clever,” which is another track that shows them doing something a little bit different. It’s yet another track that’s much more melodic, and the vocals on this one really stand in the spotlight. I’m not sure if it’s the best choice for a closing track, but it’s still a good song. Overall, I really enjoyed this record. It definitely threw some surprises at me with some tracks that really stood out. As a whole, it shows a bit more experimentation and variation with the band’s sound, especially compared to some of the band’s earlier work. LISTEN TO THE ALBUM HERE:
