The Standby. delivers angst and anguish through their newest release of “Constant Nausea.”
The band brings a mix of alternative rock and a dash of old school hardcore which drives this modern rock sound you don’t want to miss. It’s not just them singing their lyrics with heartfelt passion, it’s also the instrumentation that helps bring out what you should be really feeling, helping drive what the singer is trying to communicate. Their use of guitar effects and amp tones bring out a haunting feeling within the music itself. Though, with the way the song is structured, it seems to ultimately hold back the full tension and angst the song truly has. As I listened to this a few times, I heard this linearity to the song that made it difficult to discern which part was which. I felt like the entire time, I wanted the chorus to just hit me a lot harder than it did. I think with the appropriate transitions, and dynamics, the song could have been held up high in tension and uncertainty, leaving the listener wondering what truly did the singer wrong to make him feel the way he does in this song. Though, this being said, it didn’t at all fall short of leaving that feeling instilled in me.
Despite that, the chorus stuck with me in my head and was absolutely catchy and brilliant. There is, without a doubt, a ton of potential in The Standby’s music that stood out to me as I was hearing their single, which is not always something I get to hear in every song; which is honesty, struggle and pain. We write music to express how we truly feel throughout a day, a week or even a year and I don’t think everyone in the world understands how very powerful this specific genre or sound can be, and we often turn to the radio for something happy and catchy, while turning our attention away from bands such as The Standby that aren’t afraid to tell us how we all really feel through their words and their music. For fans of alternative rock and post-hardcore genres, you don’t want to miss what The Standby has to offer in their music and especially in their newest single “Constant Nausea” that you’ll be constantly going back to in your playlist for some time.
