Earlier this month, Varia released their debut EP, “In Time We All Unravel.” In this Track By Track, vocalist Patrick Ryan gives an inside look on how the EP came to be.
1. Don’t Let Me Go
Patrick: This song is one of the more straight forward ones on the EP. It’s about suicide and the manic feeling one gets when they are seriously considering it. A lot of great people have written songs about suicide prevention but with this song I wanted to write it from a bit of a darker perspective. This was actually the first song we finished as a band, so it was fitting to have it be the opening track. 2. What’s Left to Believe Patrick: What’s Left to Believe is about not wanting to let your dreams slip by without trying to make them a reality. Every person wonders to themselves at some point if their dream in life will ever be achieved, and sometimes people don’t get to achieve what they want and they make peace with that, and that’s great for them! It’s something I envy. But when I myself think about it, I get a sense of panic and start to stress out and that’s what I wanted to convey in this song. I just don’t want to become old and look back and have the regret of not at least trying to make my goal in life happen. 3. You Make Me Hate Myself Patrick: So, this song is probably the weirdest one on the EP in my opinion. The lyrics are actually more of a ‘collage’ of different emotions of what people say and feel when they’re in a heated argument. It’s not 100% supposed to make sense, because sometimes when we get upset with one another we say things that don’t fully represent what’s on our minds, and that’s what I wanted to showcase lyrically in the song. 4. In Time We All Unravel Patrick: “In Time” is probably the most personal song on the EP for me, and it’s also the one I wrote the quickest. Normally it’ll take me a week or so to write lyrics for a song, but I wrote this one in about an hour. This song is me talking to a past version of myself and just trying to explain things about my life and how even just a couple years ago I had it all wrong. I’ve made a decent amount of mistakes in my life and I used to think that would affect the person I would become, and toward the end of the song I try telling myself that everything is going to be okay as long as I stay on track. 5. Let You In Patrick: “Let You In” is the song that closes out the EP, and basically what it’s about is just wanting to be able to be vulnerable with someone and know that they won’t betray you. The concept is not super complicated, we wanted something simple that we could get a ton of emotion out of so that way the album ended on a memorable note. LISTEN TO THE EP HERE
