Over the summer, Australian pop punk band Paper Thin released their latest EP, “Living With. Being Without.” In this track-by-track, vocalist and bassist Spencer gives an inside look on how each song on the EP came to be. 1. When You Call Living With. Being Without. feels like a big step up from our Debut EP, and for me feels much more collaborative. This song was written between me and (Singer/Guitarist) Aidan. Our friend Grace Turner lends her voice in the chorus, and it really makes the song in my opinion. We spent a lot of time trying to decide we would get to see, and our producer Matt Taylor suggested Grace and it was a perfect fit. 2. London This song is all Aidan! He came to us with this song pretty much written, it was just about putting the pieces together. I’m really happy with my bass playing on this song – we worked hard to get a good tone with this song, and it shines through. I also use a fuzz pedal that used to belong to Aidan. He’s the real hero here. 3. Post It Note For me personally, this EP is about anxiety and relationships. Since starting this band I think I started a new relationship, and became a little more aware of my own mental health – and I think this comes out in the song. This was the last song we wrote for the EP. We knew we wanted to put this out as a 7” – so this song was written with a few different things in mind; it had to go for a certain length, and had to sit next to ‘Scared Of Flying’. I think writing to certain constraints really helped us make something great with this song. 4. Scared Of Flying We put the original version of Scared Of Flying out in March. We recorded it with a stand alone single. When we started recording for the EP, it was pretty apparent there was going to be a disparity in recording quality. On top of that, after months of playing it like, the song had transformed in a few ways. We decided to re-record it to reflect the sound of the EP better, and to make sure it flowed into Post It Note better. This version is much better in my opinion!
