The Parallel have released their debut full-length album, titled “Weaver.” Introductory track “Decipher” brings some very impressive guitars (something you’ll hear quite a lot of all throughout the record) right away. The synths and electronic elements added in bring more emphasis to the track, as the drums help build the song up during some of the louder sections, where the vocals get much more aggressive. Second is “Monochrome,” one of my favorite tracks on this record. I love the more melodic hardcore leaning vocals, preparing for an emotional chorus where the raw clean vocals really stick out, accompanied by more impressive guitars and drums, followed by a much softer verse that really helps elevate the track. Like the track before it, “Encrypt (Ion)” also brings a lot of energy instantly, through the Incredibly fast drums and guitars that blew me away, and the faster, more aggressive instrumentals fit very well with the much harsher vocals. Following that is the single “Chimera,” another favorite of mine. The synths and piano in the intro really drew me in, but it isn’t long before the harder instrumentals kick in, with the guitars replicating the piano parts that grabbed my attention in the first place. Some of the screams on here are a lot harsher and fit very well with the more aggressive sections, and others are are a bit more emotional, showing influences of perhaps melodic hardcore as opposed to strictly metalcore. Speaking of emotion, that’s something you can also hear in the clean vocals during and after the first chorus of the track, delivering another great performance.
“Time Tunnel” is probably one of the heaviest offerings this record has, the vocals on here are some of the most aggressive on this record, and the same goes for the darker instrumentals. Immediately afterwards is one of the biggest standouts on the album for me, “Gloom.” I love the catchy and almost groove driven riffs on this track, as well as the vocals. The screams are a lot more emotional and the cleans are shouted and really grab your attention. As a whole, this song stands out a lot compared to the rest of these as far as the vocals go. “Wanderlust” is similar to the last track in regards to the vocal performance, and the composition in genera feels a bit brighter, perfectly matching the melodies delivered by the cleaner vocals. I really loved the chorus on here and how the song fades out, with those brighter guitar parts closing out the song. “Thread” starts out with some more shouted vocals, and the verses are a cycle of those and the screams as far as the vocals are concerned, and I love how the song has more of a balance of both aggressive and melodic moments rather than it entirely leaning more towards one side over the other. “Ego Death” is one that I feel has more hardcore influences than some other subgenres of heavy music, specifically with a lot of the rhythm guitar and bass work and even some of the unclean vocals. Despite that, there are contrasting sections with instrumentals that aren’t quite as dark compared to the rest of the song and cleaner vocals delivering some catchy melodies. “Moirai” starts off with some much cleaner guitars, and I love the more ambient vibe that the beginning of the song has. The vocals are initially softer like the instrumentals that open the track up, but the song builds up as the harder drums and guitars kick in and the vocals get even louder, putting on another performance that I enjoyed. There is some screaming on here and at that point, the instrumentals get faster and more aggressive, but for the most part, the track is pretty melodic. The last two tracks, “Wax Wings” and “Oracle” mix both have melodic moments that absolutely blew me away, but when they get aggressive, those are some of the most aggressive moments this record brings, especially vocally. Overall, I really like this album. Throughout all of these tracks, the band mixes aggression with more raw melodic moments and does it so well, making the record as a whole a solid metalcore release that fans of the genre should definitely have on their radar.
