Brigades have released their long-awaited new EP, titled “True Blue.”
The EP starts off with “Turmoil,” a song that has more pop punk and post-hardcore influences. This track feels nostalgic, in a way, and reminds me a bit of the band’s earlier work, as well as bands of those genres who released music in the early 2000s. “Buffy” is a bit of a slower track, but it’s still a hard hitting one, especially vocally. There’s so many great melodies throughout the entire track and it’s really catchy.
Another track that stood out to me quite a bit is the one that follows, titled “China Doll.” It brings back some more pop punk leaning instrumentation to create a very upbeat rhythm that drives the song. There’s a huge chorus that brings some more memorable melodies to the table, although the song as a whole is catchy as well, and some of these melodies have definitely been stuck in my head since I first heard the track. Something else about this track that I found interesting was how they added some orchestral instruments in the bridge to emphasize it a bit more before the vocals come back in for the final chorus. “Sucker” has a huge intro with some pretty impressive instrumentals, as well as another noteworthy chorus. “Caligraphy” starts out acoustically led at first, but it’s still a pretty upbeat track. I love the raw vocal performance on here, singing some pretty interesting lyrics like “you either get bitter or you get better.” The EP finishes out with “Finish Your Chardonnay,” another fun and upbeat song with some really great hooks. Overall, I really liked this EP. While it shows some elements that were a huge part of the band’s previous releases, it also not shows them not only polishing their sound, but experimenting a bit as well. The band have crafted a solid release that pushes the boundaries of the pop punk, emo and post-hardcore genres, and has so many standout moments that both die-hard fans and first-time listeners will find enjoyable.
