I Prevail have released their sophomore full-length, titled “Trauma.”
Three singles came out prior to the album’s release, and they all show the listener a little bit of what they can expect from this album in one way or another. First single “Bow Down” is easily the most aggressive single out of the bunch and is honestly one of the most consistently heavy tracks on the entire record, “Breaking Down” really embraces the newer influences incorporated and combines that with aggressive vocals and instrumentals during the verses, while the hard hitting chorus kind of mixes everything together. The third and final single “Paranoid” feels like a combination of these two tracks, with melodic hook and catchy melodies and a pre-chorus that includes both aggressive vocals and a giant beat drop with electronics and synths.
Something noticeable throughout most of this record is the fact that the band incorporated some new influences into a lot of these songs. The more hip-hop leaning “Rise Above It” (which features rapper Justin Stone), interlude “Goodbye” and ballad “Every Time You Leave” (which features Delaney Jane) all really embrace these newer influences, whether through the vocals, instrumentals, or both. For fans of the band’s earlier work, primarily the heavier aspects of it, there are still a couple of tracks on here that lean towards the much more aggressive side. “Bow Down” is a great example of this, and “Gasoline” brings that aggression right away with harsher vocals and chaotic instrumentals. Meanwhile, “Deadweight” has verses that are pretty heavy both vocally and instrumentally, leading up to one of the catchiest choruses this band has ever written. A few of the remaining tracks tie everything together, combining all the different influences on this album. “DOA,” “Low,” and “Hurricane” are three of the catchiest tracks on the whole record, “Let Me Be Sad” and closer “I Don’t Belong Here” are a couple more really good ballads with more of a laid back vibe, aside from huge choruses with emotional vocal performances. What makes “Trauma” such an interesting album is the way it includes elements from the band’s older work while experimenting with some new and very different influences, and all of that is combined together throughout the record to create a memorable sophomore effort.
