Following a series of EPs and singles over the past few years, Chief State are returning with their debut full-length, titled “Tough Love.”
“Try Hard” brings catchy melodies and instrumentals throughout the intro and verses and more aggressive shouted vocals during the chorus, and even more energetic instrumentals conclude the track. Singles “Deciduous” and “Reprise” both bring some raw vocals in the verses, along with upbeat instrumentals that bring equally as much emotion as the songs lead up to their more melodic and memorable choruses, which bring more strong vocal performances. Closing track “Peace Of Mind” brings similar amounts of energy right from the start with the guitars and drums leading the intro, followed by catchy melodies in the melodic verses and the very memorable pre-choruses and choruses later on in the track.
The slower and more midtempo tracks bring some of the major standout moments on the record. “Something Good For Once” is a bit darker and brings emotional shouted vocals in the chorus that are accompanied by catchy riffs and drumbeats before an energetic second verse where the instrumentals (especially those drums) show off a lot more, “Biding Time” delivers unforgettable hooks and choruses through some more powerful vocal performances, and “Choke” brings a more laid back and relaxed vibe at first with softer vocals, more ambient guitars and a slower tempo, but it becomes a harder hitting and more energetic track, and the vocals in the second verse are a lot louder and provide tons of emotion. Chief State’s debut album was well worth the wait. The band continues to incorporate the energy and emotion found in their previous material and created a very memorable record. "tough love" will be available this friday, march 27th, 2020. listen to the latest single "BIDING TIME" here:
