REVIEWS
AFI have released their latest EP, titled “The Missing Man.” Lead single “Trash Bat” kicks things off, instantly bringing a lot of energy with the harder drums and guitars driving the intro and the bass that accompanies the vocals during the verses. The vocal performance delivers some catchy melodies, and the song as a whole makes a great opener. The drumming is very strong on “Break Angels,” shown evidently in its intro, while the bass shows off in the verses (much like in the previous track) and the darker guitars and melodies stand out as the song builds up to its chorus. “Back Into The Sun” contrasts from the track before it in regards to the composition, definitely being a bit more happy-sounding, shown not only in the instrumentals during the beginning of the track but also the memorable melodies, especially in the chorus, where the vocals really shine. Something else I really enjoyed about this track was the hard hitting instrumental section later on, bringing an emotional guitar solo right before the final choruses.
“Get Dark” definitely shows the more punk leaning influences of the band’s sound with faster drums, darker guitar and bass providing the energy that drives the song. The EP closes out with its title track, which might be my favorite. It‘s very different from most of these other tracks, slowing things down a bit and incorporating softer guitar parts, with the vocal performance matching those instrumentals perfectly. The performances on here capture the overall more relaxed vibe and tone of the song very well, but during the moments where the vocals get a bit louder, the performance is a lot more raw, and it still works just as well. Overall, I loved this EP. I was very impressed by these tracks and I can honestly say AFI has won me over with this memorable release.
