Set Sights have released their debut album, titled “The Heavy Alternative.” This album has plenty of aggression, seen right away with the catchy and energetic opening track “Rise Above,” and the following track, “Violent Words,” which is even heavier with the loud, hard-hitting instrumentals and harsher vocals. Another more aggressive track is found later on in this record - “Collapse.” I love the energy on this one, driven by the furious drums and pretty catchy guitars. The tempo change and breakdown make it stand out a bit more from the other heavier tracks on here and I think it’s definitely one of the highlights of this record.
There are quite a few tracks on here that are a lot more melodic than others and those tracks bring some very emotional performances, especially in the vocal department. “Buried In Stone (Shadow Walk),” “Nostalgia,” and the incredible closer “Cancer Season” are all great examples of this, along with one of the singles. Some of my favorite moments on this record are found in the lyrics on a few of these tracks and the emotion conveyed through that. A couple examples are the line “I’m pulling teeth just to find my sanity; it’s funny how I could feel so alive doing all the things that kill me” from “Collapse” and the line “this can’t be the end of me” from “Realization (Mourning).” Some other lyrics I enjoyed come from the second single “Planted,” which are the lines “A cry for help won’t break through my teeth, tie the weight to my feet, let go of me” and ”A concrete bed feels like such a familiar friend, I’ve accepted the stillness, accepted the end.” Overall, I liked this record. I thought it delivered a lot of emotion and passion, which I absolutely loved about it, and that as a whole, it’s a pretty solid hardcore release.
