InRetrospect have released plenty of material over the past two years, and to start off 2022, the band have brought a brand new track titled “substrate.”
The song begins with some darker guitar riffs, which quickly show the band’s metalcore-influenced sound. The first verse is a bit more melodic vocally, while the pre-chorus and second verse brings back the heavier elements heard earlier on. Much like verse 1, the choruses also contain more clean vocals rather than screams, and the vocal and instrumental performances add a lot of emotion to the track.
Speaking of which, another aspect of the song that displays the same level of emotion is its lyrics. Overall, the song is centered around mental health and explains what it’s like to struggle with mental illness and feel like things aren’t getting better. Lines like “Now I’ve been trying to stop myself drift away again, but it seems no matter what I do I struggle in the end” and “Everything’s too similar to mean a change from death’s front door” explain the song’s lyrical theme perfectly and are honest lyrics that really let the listener in and show them how this feels. Some other major highlights of the track are some of the instrumental performances throughout the track, most notably the drumming fills that drive the chorus and the extremely impressive guitar solo found towards the end. With “substrate.,” InRetrospect has delivered a stellar track containing emotive lyrics and performances. "SUBSTRATE." IS AVAILABLE NOW. LISTEN TO THE TRACK HERE:
