Heart Like War have released their latest EP, titled “Start Over.”
“Rewind” starts off the EP very well. The chorus on here has a lot of memorable melodies and some meaningful lyrics, particularly the line “it’s never too late to start over and chase these broken dreams to make something of me.” Lead single “Screaming” has some catchy guitar parts, and an even catchier chorus. This is one song that I feel shows the more punk leaning elements of this band’s pop punk sound, and it sounds more reminiscent of older bands in the genre.
“Some Days” has some darker instrumentation and vocal melodies that make it stand out quite a bit as far as the songwriting goes. As well as that, the lyrics touch on the topic of mental health, but the bridge shows a bit of positivity and hope (“Someday I’ll find myself again; today I’m somebody new.”) “City Lights” is very fast paced and energetic. The melodies on here are really catchy and the instrumentation on here, once again, reminds me a bit of older music in this genres. “One Step Back” starts out seeming like it’ll be more of an acoustically driven ballad, but it eventually turns into a more upbeat, pop punk-leaning track that closes out this EP pretty well. Overall, I liked this EP. There’s plenty of emotion and passion shown in various ways all throughout the release and each of these songs show the band’s fun and energetic take on the genre.
