Since their formation in 2015, Spinning has had quite a long history. After multiple name changes and an accompanying shift in sound, the band have just released their first piece of music under the new moniker, a self-titled EP.
The EP begins with the band’s first single since the name change, “St. Stephen’s Green.” Musically, the song has simplistic, but catchy instrumentation, and the drum fills caught my attention as the song built up to its choruses. This track also has a couple of lyrics that I found intriguing: “In the world of silent films I know you'd say my name / On the screen the film could burn, but you'd never fade away” and “On the flight I asked if you felt fine, you said everything with you feels right / But now I feel like I lost my mind, cause I'm lonely like the moon sometimes / Slowly spinning through the night In my mind.”
“Sunrise” combines acoustic guitar with some cleaner electric guitars and softer percussion. The vocals deliver a solid performance in a later section of the track, where the singer showcases a higher register of his voice, and the bridge not only is where the instrumentation really kicks in, but also contains quite a memorable guitar solo. The opening line “I remember everything” sets the scene for what’s to come lyrically, as the rest of the song reminisces on memories from a previous relationship and reflects on feelings of loneliness in the wake of a breakup (“Is being alone too much too soon?”) “Spinning Out” has a harder-hitting intro where the drums and bass stand out, the instrumentation overall brings lots of energy to the track, and the song’s huge chorus is followed by another very catchy lead guitar line in the post-chorus. This track seems to focus a lot on mental health, showing someone opening up about how they’ve been feeling as of late (with two examples being the lyrics “I feel so dated, like a prehistoric rock so faded in my mind / I've been feeling so left behind, I'm not ready to lose my mind” and “I don’t even know why I'm still here and why I try, and every time I wanna die I fill my lungs to feel alive”). “Figure 8” initially contrasts a bit from the tracks before it, as it starts out led solely by the acoustic guitar and vocals, which present a more laid-back tone in the beginning. Eventually, more guitars, as well as the bass and drums, get added in, and the song becomes more upbeat a minute and a half into its duration. The bridge really highlights the vocals, and the instrumentals do a great job of building up that section and preparing for the end of the EP. This song also concludes the EP with some more meaningful lyrics: “It's been a while but I still have splinters from the hardwood floor I tore apart / Hid my face, spent my winter misunderstood wishing on a star” and “I'm so afraid that I'm a quitter, I let my dreams just fall apart / But I know I'm more than I've been being, but things just get so hard.” With clever lyricism and memorable composition found on each of the EP’s four tracks, Spinning have a strong debut release on their hands.
