RCKLSS have released their debut EP, titled “So Cynical.” RCKLSS are a band that I actually discovered pretty recently, and after hearing the two singles they’d put out prior to this EP, I couldn’t wait to hear more, and ended up being pretty impressed with what they created.
“Every Time” brings a catchy, guitar driven intro reminiscent of the early days of pop punk. The pre-chorus is really catchy and is easily the highlight of the track, and overall, it makes a great opener. The band’s debut single, “Animals,” is a bit slower, but still has a lot to offer. The bass and drums show off a lot as they drive the rhythm of the track, the composition is a bit darker, and the chorus provides riffs just as catchy as those that start off the first track. “Struggle” continues the pattern of having dark composition, with a haunting intro that lures the listener in. The song starts off softer, but soon becomes a hard hitting ballad with plenty of passion and emotion bleeding through the performances, especially the vocals. Kicking off the back half of this EP is one of my personal favorites, second single “Tell You.” It’s an extremely catchy and unforgettable track with a huge replay factor and makes the perfect choice for a single. “Sorry For Trying” is another fairly upbeat track, and the tempo on here actually seems pretty similar to the one on the last track. The beginning of this one is softer as well, allowing the vocals and the melodies they deliver to captivate the listener before the instrumentals kick , and the performances made this track another favorite of mine on here. The EP concludes with “Empty Space,” one I personally considered a major standout as far as sound goes, as cleaner guitars and echoing vocals give it a more ambient vibe. Harder instrumentals do come in after the first chorus, but that ambience still remains all throughout the rest of the track. One of my favorite parts of this song,, however, was the bridge, where the instrumentals help build it up and the vocals provide one of the best performances on the whole EP. Following the success of their fantastic singles, RCKLSS have outdone themselves with the remaining tracks on “So Cynical.” The overall sound is hard to describe, but the band mixes pop and elements of pop punk and rock and adds a bit of variation across these tracks, all of which stand out individually and bring something to the table.
