Sylar have released their latest record, titled “Seasons.”
Sylar are a band I’ve been a fan of for quite some time now. I’ve known of them since they had gotten signed to Hopeless Records in 2016 and had released their album “Help!” later that same year. I really enjoyed that record, as well as some of the band’s earlier material, so I was definitely excited to hear a new record from them.
The album starts off with the title track, a pretty catchy song with some really good melodies and, although there’s not too much I have to say about this track in particular, I will say that it makes a pretty good opener. Following that is the single “All Or Nothing,” one that shows off the various different elements that make up the band’s sound, from the breakdown and darker instrumentation to the emotional clean vocal performance. After that is another single, “No Way,” a track that really stood out to me, mainly because of the lyrical themes. The lyrics of this track seem to talk about the struggles of being on tour and being in the music industry in general (“I stay strong and it’s hard to do; the truth is that I'm just as scared as you are” and “you think I've got it made, live the perfect life, but when love's not in arms reach, nothing ever feels right” being a couple examples). “Wait For You” is a pretty catchy track with a memorable chorus and post chorus, as well as a bit of screaming that’s added into the mix, and it’s also another one that I feel has a good mix of the different elements of this band’s sound. Next up is “SHOOK!,” another single and another standout on this record - this time in regards to the sound. It has a very dark vibe to it, and there’s quite a bit of rappin, at least in the beginning. I also think that this track is one of the strongest on the record as far as the instrumentation goes - I love the darker guitars, the catchy bass parts, and the impressive drumming. “Winter” is an interlude that has some softer guitars for a change, and as far as the vocals are concerned, the spoken word section really fits well on the track. Right afterwards is “Open Wounds,” which is easily my favorite out of all the singles and probably my favorite on this entire record. The chorus on here is one of my favorites that the band has ever written, this is yet another track that shows the various sides of Sylar’s sound, and the emotion in the lyrics is put across very well. Speaking of emotion - another track that shows a lot of it is the following track, “Giving Up.” The lyrics on this one are very dark (one example being “I sit here in silence afraid that I might give up) and the performances put those emotions across very well. “Sickminded” has a huge intro, and I think the orchestral instruments really added emphasis to that section of the track. It’s a lot slower and more melodic, and reminds me a bit of “Dark Daze” or even “Maintain Closure” from the band’s previous record. “Same Dance” seems to have a bit more aggression to it, especially in the instrumentals, and it seems a bit reminiscent of one of the somewhat heavier tracks off of that last record, such as “Assume” or even the title track, “Help!” In all honesty, this may be the darkest and most aggressive track on the entire record, at least instrumentally, and vocally, it brings some great rapping and some very interesting melodies. The album closes out with the track “Doubt Me,” another darker track that also some unique melodies in its catchy chorus. Overall, I thought that this record was pretty good. It’s definitely a bit more experimental and generally a bit different for this band, but it also shows the continuous progression and evolution of their sound over the years, which I admire about it.
