Counterparts have released their latest EP, titled “Private Room.” This EP is a collection of songs that didn’t make it on their last album. While I didn’t really get into that record, I still wanted to give this EP a fair chance and I’m so glad that I did.
“Monument” hits hard right away with the fast paced instrumentation, and I also found myself enjoying the vocal performance on this track quite a bit. Despite it being a really short song, it’s still a solid one and such a good choice for the opener, as well as the lead single for this EP. Second single “Selfishly I Sink” has a pretty interesting rhythm to it and brings so much energy to it in the impressive instrumental performances, most notably the guitars and drums. There’s also a tempo change that kind of caught me by surprise, but it also made the song stand out even more than it already did. Some other standout moments on this EP for me come from the closing track, “We Forgive.” I love the dark, yet still melodic rhythm guitars on here, and the lead guitar work is fantastic, deserving of much more credit and time in the spotlight than it gets. Overall, I really liked this EP. I was impressed by the performances and the energy and passion that those performances delivered, and loved the variety on here, with each song standing out on its own and sounding a bit different from the others.
