Essen, Germany-based metalcore group Breathe Atlantis already have quite a few albums under their belt within their first several years as a band. 2022 brought the latest of the four, titled "Overdrive."
“Break The Silence” is driven by captivating guitar and bass riffs, and the song seems to focus on leaving the past behind and trying to break free from anything that’s holding you back from doing so (“Breathe in to maintain control, breathe out to escape the hole of darkness and doubt”). The melodies on here - particularly within the chorus - are pretty catchy (and there’s more of that to be found on the album), and the bridge and breakdown hint at the band’s metalcore influences, which listeners also hear more of in the tracks that follow. “Overdrive” opens with an unforgettable vocal hook that returns in the anthemic chorus, and the other sections bring a nice mix of sung and screamed vocals. Lyrically, the song seems to be about mental health (examples of this lyrical theme include “Am I born for the misery? Will I ever find the truth in me?” and “Break the walls inside my mind and kill the devil inside”) and the vocal performances convey those emotions very well.
“Savior” is quite similar to the track before it in regards to its structure, but the vocal melodies in the chorus and a lot of the instrumentals throughout the song still definitely caught my attention. Speaking of which, the next track is one that stood out to me from my first listen, “Earthquake,” which combines even more striking vocal melodies and instrumental performances that show how skilled each member of the band is. The lyrics of this track are a bit reminiscent of those in “Overdrive,” once again discussing mental health, but focusing more on persevering through those difficult situations (“No earthquake shakes my ground, I will get through the night / Got the darkness inside, I am here to fight” and “Too many times I gave up on life / Couldn’t keep from shutting down the lights, but now I’m immortal”). “Dead And Gone” is primarily on the more melodic side of things (with the exception of the breakdown) and contains another one of the best choruses on the record, and “Changes” highlights this more melodic side of the band’s sound as well. In contrast, “Heavy Hearts” brings back some heavier instrumentals and vocals in the verses, combining that with a more melodic chorus that’s also very catchy. “Gates Of Hell” is quite similar to two of the previously mentioned tracks in the sense that its melodic aspects are focused on the most, and it brings one of the most anthemic choruses on the album. “Out There” is a reflective track, as the lyrics depict someone feeling overwhelmed by not only the difficult things they’re dealing with (”Surrounded by all this suffering, too much weight that I can’t take”), but also the hardships that people around the world are facing (“Scars on my soul, it makes me wonder why do people have to die?”). “Going Down” wraps up this record, and it’s not only a strong closing track, but it’s another highlight of the record as a whole. The mesmerizing, emotive vocals and impressive drums stood out a lot, especially in the song’s massive choruses. “Overdrive” contains ten alt-rock and post-hardcore anthems and collectively, these tracks comprise a remarkable record overall.
