Dead Fall are releasing their new EP, titled “Never Expected.” Dead Fall are a band who I had heard of in the past, but never really got around to checking out. Upon hearing this EP, I was very impressed and fell in love with the band’s sound. “AC” kicks things off with a dark, guitar driven intro, which gradually gets more hard hitting as each individual instrument gets added into the mix one by one, and the verses do the same thing, allowing each instrument to shine. The chorus and bridge show the more pop punk influences in the band’s sound, but there’s still some aggression here and there, especially during the verses. The track as a whole makes a strong opener and is one I could honestly have seen being a single. “Delude” has an intro similar to the track, delivering more catchy guitar riffs. The song definitely starts out on a more melodic note, but the vocals definitely get harsher and it’s not long before that happens, the instrumentation gradually getting louder and building up to a chorus that hits harder on all cylinders. The drums on this track are also fantastic and show off plenty during the bridge, which leads up to a huge final chorus and fairly heavy ending. “Temporary Bliss” is probably the most pop punk leaning track this EP has to offer, with its catchy instrumentals and infectious chorus. Yet, it still shows a bit of aggression, and the verses show the different styles that both of the vocalists of this band have. Second to last is the lead single “Drowned Out,” which I thought was such a great choice for that, as I feel like it really encompasses the overall sound of this EP. From the energetic instrumentals driving the rhythm to the vocals that portray a lot of emotion, whether through a cleaner or harsher performance, and I think that really shows off during the chorus, which I also feel really stands out on here as far as the choruses go. The fifth and final track on here is “Never Expected,” and I found that title to be very fitting, because I didn’t expect what it was about to deliver. The dynamics on here are great, going from a huge intro to a much softer verse to a harsher pre-chorus, foreshadowing a chorus as big as the beginning of the song is, and melody wise, it really embraces the band’s darker approach to the pop punk and alternative rock genres. I found this EP to be a really interesting listen. I not only was drawn to the band’s darker take on the punk, pop punk and alternative rock genres, but also the way that they mix so many different elements from those genres - they do it very well and I think it comes across perfectly throughout this EP. LISTEN TO THE LEAD SINGLE “DROWNED OUT” HERE:“NEVER EXPECTED” WILL BE RELEASED THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY 25th, 2019.
