Decay have released their debut EP, titled “Modern Conversations.”
“Sentiment” opens up this EP, showing off the darker aspect of the band’s sound through the instrumentals in the hard hitting intro, leading up to a really memorable chorus. The following track, “New Again,” is definitely pretty similar overall, but allows the bass to show off a bit more, as well as letting the vocals do the same as they put on an emotional performance during the chorus. The midpoint of this EP is the lead single “Slow Decline,” and I think this song was definitely a good choice for that, as it’s one of the most interesting tracks on the release, bringing another emotional performance both vocally and instrumentally, and the dynamics make the song stand out even more. “Been Blue” is another one of my favorites on this EP, from the energetic intro to the catchy melodies and balance of melodic and shouted vocals and the slower bridge that builds up to a huge ending. It’s one of the most captivating tracks on the record, and I can say the same about the final track, “Lullaby,” as well. It’s a lot softer and a lot slower, but the bass and drums really shine as they drive the rhythm, along with the more ambient guitars, and the vocal harmonies fit perfectly with the more laid back and relaxed vibe that the song has. That being said, the song gets a lot more hard hitting around two and a half minutes in for an emotional and powerful bridge before the song fades out, ending the EP on a very strong note. Decay have a very interesting sound, combining different elements of emo, alternative rock, and other genres, and that sound shows very well through the different tracks on this EP, which only gets better and better as it goes on.
