For the past four years, FOXHAUNT has consistently been releasing an abundance of singles, and last year, the singles being released were beginning to lead up to the band’s long-awaited debut EP, titled “Mindset.”
The EP commences with “Enemy,” which opens with a powerful intro led by the guitars, bass, and drums, as well as synths. The vocals and lead guitars are the main focus in the verses, while chugging guitars and bass and a simple kick-snare drumbeat drive the pre-chorus. The guitar riffs from the intro return in the chorus, as well as the breakdown towards the end of the song, a section that really showcases the band’s heavier side. Piano and additional synths open up “Parallels” before the drums, guitars, and bass really start to kick in, making that section more dramatic. The rhythm section is highlighted a lot more in the verses, and in the first verse particularly, the vocals sing some of the most intriguing lyrics on the EP: “We’re in parallel worlds but it’s not what you think. When we don’t connect it’s harder to be me. Is it harder to be you?” The striking instrumentation from the intro returns in the chorus, and the second verse and pre-chorus contain a very emotive vocal performance. While the song is definitely on the more melodic side overall, the instrumentation in the bridge once again displays the post-hardcore/metalcore side of the band’s sound a little bit before the chorus returns for the last time. The rhythm and lead guitars team up to drive the intro of “Ronin,” and the swift drumming keeps that energy going during the verses, which contain a mix of sung and shouted vocals. This song offers another massive chorus with melodies that are just as catchy as the guitars opening the track. The band’s metalcore influences make a comeback through the riffs in “Monster,” most notably those opening the track, but the bridge is where the heavier instrumentation really gets its time in the spotlight. The vocals are showcased a lot more in the verses, as well as the huge chorus. “Make Me Feel Alive” wraps the EP up, and this one slows the tempo down a little bit. This song also has quite a dark tone as well, displayed very well through the dissonant notes and chords played by the guitars and the way the riffs decrescendo in certain sections of the song, particularly the intro and chorus. Speaking of those two sections, they both contain a very memorable vocal hook, sung over the lines “I just need to make a change to my ways cause I’m so frustrated, find me something to make me feel alive.” In addition, the synths create a nice lead that adds more to the choruses, and the breakdown blends those synths with some crushing riffs and shouted vocals chanting “I don’t want to feel a thing!” “Mindset” combines anthemic choruses and soaring hooks with more aggressive instrumentation, and as a whole, this EP is an extraordinary debut from FOXHAUNT.
