REVIEW BY: MEGANYouth Fountain are about to release their debut full-length, titled “Letters To Our Former Selves.” I’ve known of Youth Fountain since, well… before they were Youth Fountain. I discovered them from their debut singles released a few years back, and reviewed their self-titled EP that came out late last year. I found those singles and that EP pretty enjoyable, but this album completely blew me away and impressed me more than I ever thought it would. Prior to releasing this album, the band dropped some of these tracks last year on their self-titled EP. “Rose Coloured Glass” brings a lot of energy and not only allows the instrumentation to shine a bit more, but it also showcases the different vocal styles that both of the members of this band have, and that dual vocal style works really well on the track. “Worried” brings some slightly darker composition to the table, while still remaining upbeat and catchy, and “Complacent” follows with vocals that instantly grabbed my attention and a really catchy chorus. The two tracks closing out this record are the first two singles that this band ever put out, “Grinding Teeth” and “Blooms,” and these two songs really show the more aggressive side of the band’s sound through the furious energy, the more raw vocal performances. Also prior to the full album release, the band dropped four singles - two of which open the record up, and do so very strongly. The thirty-one second long “Helpless” really sets the tone for the record and prepares the listener for what is to come. The passionate vocals come in right off the bat, followed by harder guitars that finish the song out not long after they kick in. Those same elements are found in the title track, with a great vocal performance delivering melodies equally as catchy as the instrumentals. Speaking of vocals, “Deadlocked” has one of the strongest performances on the album in that regard, and that track brings plenty of emotion through not only the performances, but also the lyrical content. Fourth and final single “Ache” carries that same emotion as well, and the louder vocals still fits and works really well with the much more laid back instrumentals. The tracks that remain are still just as good. “Moody” is really catchy from both a vocal and instrumental standpoint, and even throws in some screamed vocals here and there, showing the band’s more aggressive side once more. “Furlough” and “Lucid” are both pretty similar to each other as far as the structure goes, both starting out with cleaner and softer guitars, but gradually building up when harder instrumentals and harsher vocals come in to bring some extra emphasis to both tracks. Youth Fountain are a band that showed plenty of promise from the start, and this album continues to do that for them. “Letters To Our Former Selves” shows Youth Fountain proving their true potential, shining a spotlight on everything that makes them so unique in the first place. “LETTERS TO OUR FORMER SELVES” IS OUT TOMORROW, MARCH 8TH, 2019.
