Eat Defeat have released their debut full-length record, titled “I Think We’ll Be Ok.”
The album opens up with “A Little Less Than OK.” It kicks off the album pretty well, and I can definitely see why it was chosen as not only the opener, but also the lead single. As the title may suggest, the lyrical content touches on the topic of mental health, and gets a bit more specific in likes like “I can’t break out of this mental state, I’m always half awake” and “Anxiety gets the better of me and I’ll struggle to breathe. I can’t just wait, need a total escape, get me out of this place.”
“Duvet Day” is the track that follows, and it seems to show the more punk leaning influences of the band’s sound. Although it’s a much shorter track (clocking in at just over forty seconds), it still shows plenty of energy, and that energy continues to shine through the next track, “Smile,” as well. “Nothing’s Wrong” is even more fast paced than the previous tracks, with an impressive bass line and drumbeat driving the rhythm. “Can’t Say I’ll Miss You” has some really catchy guitar parts leading the intro, as well as some memorable hooks that will very easily get stuck in the listener’s head. “Shortcuts” was another one that really stuck out to me instrumentally, from the clashing guitar parts to the hard hitting drums. “Running In Place” and “Scorched Earth” are both a bit darker, at least as far as the instrumentation goes. Speaking of that - the guitar and bass work on here impressed me yet again. “Self Help (For The Helplessly Selfless)” is another energetic track, and the main thing that stood out on this one in particular is the composition, especially the vocal melodies. The album closes with the track “Not Today, Old Friend,” which is a bit slower compared to the rest of the record, but it’s still a fun and happy-sounding pop punk track regardless. Overall, I liked this record. It has quite a few memorable moments (most notably found in some of the melodies and overall composition), and a lot of the performances throughout these songs are very impressive. The band have crafted a fun, energetic and enjoyable release that is definitely worth checking out. listen to the album ON SPOTIFY HERE:
