From States Away have released their third EP, titled “I Swear This Light Won’t Fade.” Opener “Night & Day” begins much slower and softer, but it quickly transitions into a huge pop rock anthem. The melodies and hooks throughout the entire song are very catchy, and I really liked some of the lyrics (“I binge and purge on every urge, I never learn from my mistakes; Inalways take a few steps forward and end falling on my face”). “Hair” is much slower compared to the majority of the EP’s opener, and much like it, the bass really shines during the verses. The song has a really good structure and is well written, with the softer verses leading up to a huge chorus, which has what is probably my favorite vocal performance on the whole EP.
“Elm Street” is quite the polar opposite, being a lot more upbeat with some fast drums driving the intro that pair up with the bass to keep that energy up throughout the verses. The chorus on here is extremely catchy and is arguably the best one on this release. The vocals of the fantastic closer, “Stalling Out,” grab your attention right off the bat in the intro, and do the same during the pre-chorus as well. There are a few softer sections during the song, but also a lot of louder ones where the performances really stand out. Much like the opener, I also enjoyed the lyrics of this one and infact, it has what are probably my favorite lyrics on this EP: “Confined inside my cubicle, the walls are caving in; I can’t believe I got so far from what I could have been.” Overall, I loved this EP. The music is upbeat and catchy for the most part, but the band also incorporates some darker elements that makes their sound stand out even more than it already does. These songs are very well-written, both musically and lyrically, and each of them bring something interesting to the table, making this release as a whole one you should definitely check out, especially if you’re a fan of pop punk and/or pop rock music.
