After a hiatus, Australian pop-punk band Skyway has returned and is preparing to release a new EP, titled “Hope Floats, Love Sinks.” I really enjoyed the band’s comeback single, “Cut The Ties,” and after that, I knew that this EP was going to be right up my alley, which it was.
The EP begins with its instrumental introductory track, “Above Snakes,” which opens with softer guitars that deliver simple riffs before the drums, bass, and additional guitars come in to help build the song up. Following this up is the lead single “Cut The Ties.” The guitars and drums instantly bring plenty of energy to the track, accompanying the catchy melodies throughout. The bridge stood out to me even more, as both the vocals and instrumentals give gripping performances before the song ends. “Heart Anchor” focuses a lot on the pop-punk influences within the band’s sound, and showcases those influences very early on with the major-key composition delivered by the guitars in the intro. The verses are a bit softer, contrasting quite a bit from the faster pre-choruses and hard-hitting chorus, where the vocals put on another attention-grabbing performance that I feel is undoubtedly one of the strongest on this entire EP.
“Glasshouse” leans more towards the punk side of pop-punk, with some more captivating vocals and fast-paced instrumentation, both of which deliver much darker composition compared to the previous track. “The Day You Went Away” closes out this EP, and opens with piano before more instrumentals quickly kick in, and both the vocals and those instrumentals deliver some more catchy composition. The choruses contain more impressive vocal performances, and the guitar solo precedes another one of those performances before the song fades out. Throughout “Hope Floats, Love Sinks,” Skyway not only showcase their pop-punk sound, but also bring a bit of variety and experimentation to the table, which makes the EP a very unique and interesting listen, and overall, it's an incredible comeback for the band. "Hope floats, love sinks" will be released this friday, november 20th, 2020. LISTEN TO THE LATEST SINGLE "HEART ANCHOR" HERE:
