As the year comes to an end, more artists and bands release more music as the end of the decade approaches. Australia’s very own Homestate delivers with a throwback, loud self titled EP. Filled with a nostalgic nod to early 2000’s pop punk and heavy lyricism, Homestate bring 2019 to an amazing end.
The EP opens with "Sunny Day," a reflecting anthem with the given impression of a Sum 41 song, reminding me of those Friday nights with my friends trying to find some freedom in our city. The song also focuses on the topic of a person trying to prove that they’re better than what they once were. The next track, "Breathe," has a lot of mesmerising guitar riffs and an unforgettable chorus. Vocalist Chad Fraser puts his heart into the track by emphasizing that he needs to breathe in order to have freedom. "Breathe" ties in well with "Lifted," the next track, which has a bombastic opening and intense lyrics. The chorus speaks out of anger and distress of a toxic relationship. The reflecting verse of “...better off without you.” speaks on how they will improve without their ex.
However, "Sick Sad World" has a different lyrical approach and tone compared to the past tracks. Still focusing on improving oneself, it has the approach of leaving the past behind but trying to bring someone they love with them. "Sick Sad World" gives us the remainder of moving forward and leaving our past behind us, even if it hurts us. Lastly, the EP ends with "Happy," which, again, connects with the other past tracks focusing on leaving a toxic relationship. It discusses trying to be happy in a relationship, when in reality, you're done faking it, with lyrics like “...cause without you, I feel more alive” reflecting on how a person feels once out of the relationship. In short, Homestate’s EP dives into the topic of leaving a hard relationship filled with anger and sadness. Homestate definitely shows their audience that it’s okay to struggle and find the time to move on. Personally, my favorite track off the EP is Lifted, as it reflects upon my personal experiences in a relationship. I truly loved listening to this EP and I cannot wait to hear more from them! This EP truly made a mark into ending the year with improving yourself and becoming a new person. "HOMESTATE" WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH, 2019.
