Distance Defined have released their latest EP, titled “Hollow Hearts.”
Opening track “Light Bearer” has some softer and more ambient guitar parts that start the song out, delivering memorable riffs before the drums kick in, building up that intro to the aggressive verses, with harsher vocals that immediately stand out and impressive instrumentals accompanying it. The ambient guitars return later on for a brief moment, preparing for the chorus, where the vocals are more raw and provide some catchy melodies. Second single “Seven Ninety Six” has lots of energy from the beginning, and those faster instrumentals fit very well with the harsher vocals, not to mention that the chorus on here is one of the best on the EP. Lead single “Voids,” which features Brock Lindow of 36 Crazyfists, begins with some of the most aggressive vocals and instrumentals on the EP, and it’s arguably the most aggressive track on the whole thing. Starting off the second half of this EP is its title track, “Hollow Hearts.” Much like the opener, it starts out with some softer guitars, but compared to the rest of the EP, it’s much more melodic both vocally and instrumentally, despite the aggression that’s still present. The softer instrumentals allow the vocals to take the spotlight and show so much emotion in the performance. “Half Healed” picks the pace back up, bringing lots of energy with its instrumentals, particularly the impressive guitars that open it up. The song is kind of similar to some of the others, mixing both aggressive and melodic elements, but it leans a lot more towards to the heavier side of the spectrum. The EP closes with “Rebirth,” a track that really surprised me. It’s also a lot softer and more laid-back until the heavier instrumentation comes in almost out of nowhere, with some pretty catchy and impressive guitars and energetic drums keeping the song upbeat. The song is only instrumental, but it’s still a good closer and an interesting track to listen to. “Hollow Hearts” shows Distance Defined adding a little bit more to the metalcore genre. These tracks stand out from one another as the band bring in a few different elements that make that happen, and the EP as a whole shows off their unique metalcore sound.
