Chicago natives Four Stars released their sophomore EP, "Headspace."
In “Headspace,” Four Stars not only discusses the struggles of anxiety, but also change. With emotional tracks like “Small Hands, Small Spaces” and “Serenity,” Four Stars connected with their audience by, not only being open with discussing mental health, but also reminding their audience that they’re not alone in their struggles.
Throughout “Headspace” I noticed the theme of progress in each track. The progress of not just maturing, but also progress in health. In “Alacrity,” the phrase “I’m colder than a ghost” is heard and can be interpreted as feeling numb. The same can be said for “Color Inside.” Throughout the track, the vocals are very monotone and subtle. “Color Inside” discusses trying to be someone you’re not. The feeling of numbness and pretending you’re okay can become very tiresome and in many ways, you feel a change must happen. What follows is “Serenity,” which breaks apart the pattern and shows the actual progress being done. The phrase “I hope you hear me singing across the country… let my words be your company.” shows the vocalist expressing comfort to his love and reminding them that they’re not alone and he’s always there. On top of that, “Serenity” also discusses being thankful for those who mean the most to you because they made you a better person. Lastly, “Small Hands, Small Spaces” discusses anxiety and finally breaking away from it. Anxiety is a struggle that many suffer from and it’s not an easy line to break, but Four Stars shows how they broke that line with the help of others. Just like in Serenity, those we love are the ones that help us through the toughest times - they’re the ones who listen to us and help us become a better person. Four Stars reminded us that it’s okay to reach out and be what we want to be. “Headspace” is a unique EP to come out this year. The emotion that went behind this EP left me reflecting on my own struggles with anxiety, making me ask myself: "am I ready to take the steps into becoming a better me?" Progress is hard and it doesn’t happen overnight; it takes time, energy, and confidence, and just like Four Stars says, “I’m a work in progress.” "HEADSPACE" WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH, 2020.
