Pop-punk quartet Crown The King have spent the past two years making a name for themselves, gaining fans in their home country of Ireland and reaching many additional listeners worldwide. The many singles the band has put out in that time span have all led up to the release of their debut EP, titled “Groundhog Day.”
The EP begins with “I Miss You (But I Don’t Feel Bad),” a track filled with energy (courtesy of the rhythm section’s prominent instruments), most notably in the chorus. That chorus contains one of the best vocal hooks on the entire EP over the lines, “I miss you but I don’t feel bad, still love you but I can’t change facts / Trying to move on but I can’t see past the mask you wear, ‘cause it’s pretty much intact.” Lyrically speaking, the song is a bitter breakup anthem that clearly displays the frustration felt due to the facade that this former partner kept putting on, while also coming to terms with the fact that the relationship just wasn’t meant to be. Second up is the EP’s title track, “Groundhog Day,” containing even more catchy instrumentals in its intro, and the same can be said about the melodies found within the chorus. The vocals in that section of the song are slightly shouted, and the vocal style during this performance really had my attention.
“Running On Empty” is third, and it quickly secured a spot as one of my favorite tracks on this release. The vocals are spotlit a lot in the verses, and the lyrics are another big highlight. Lines like “Looking back at who I tried to be back then it’s really sad to see I couldn’t be myself / Put too much weight in other people’s perceptions, now I’ve ended my campaign of self-deception” are reflective and depict someone struggling with their mental health, but wanting to take steps to improve themselves and their lives. This lyrical theme is shown once again through the lyrics in the chorus: “I’ve been running on empty since I can recall, feels like the weight of the world has kept me grounded for too long / I’ve been hoping for someone to show me the way, but now I’m back on my feet, won’t let this summer get away.” The drums build up the song’s bridge, and a chorale of gang vocals precedes the final chorus. Concluding the EP is “Melissa,” a song with solid songwriting structure, shown through the seamless flow between sections and the catchy riffs and melodies found throughout, most notably the guitars leading the intro and the vocal melodies in the chorus. The four tracks on “Groundhog Day” showcase Crown The King’s polished modern pop-punk sound through vigorous instrumentation and memorable vocal and instrumental hooks, and collectively, they create a spectacular debut for the band.
