Young Culture has gained quite a bit of success over the last few years with the releases of their 2019 EP "(This Is) Heaven and their self-titled debut LP last fall. Now, the trio is back, bringing some of the new songs of the summer with their new EP "Godspeed."
The EP initiates with its title track, which picks up where the band’s debut LP left off with guitar riffs and melodies reminiscent of the song “Compass” and poppier vocal production in some places, similar to that of “Hailey Beverly 2016.” Overall, the song makes a solid single and opening track and starts the album off on a pretty strong note. “Hum” is up next, bringing a carefree, happy tone shown through the irresistible instrumentals and melodies and the feelings of infatuation in the lyrics (“I don’t think it’s ironic that you sound like my favorite song, I’m only humming along”). The track is a lot of fun to listen to, and the vibrant music video helps display this even more. “Shiver” is third, and the vocal talent is showcased a lot on here leading up to the song’s extremely catchy chorus, surrounded by some equally as noteworthy guitar and bass riffs throughout the softer verses.
“Simplemindedteens” is second-to-last, and it conveys a sense of nostalgia throughout as the lyrics are told from the perspective of someone reminiscing on better days and begging to be “taken back” to those moments in time. Between those lyrics, the gang vocals throughout that will inevitably make listeners want to sing along with them, and the lively guitars and drums driving the song, it’s a feel-good summer track from start to finish. “Head High (Swim)” is mostly acoustically driven and starts out much more stripped-down in comparison to the rest of the EP, and the lyrics are centered around mental health, with darker verses that depict someone suffering in silence and feeling like no one sees the pain they’re in (“no one hears what you didn’t say”), and uplifting choruses encouraging listeners to keep persevering through their own struggles (“When the water’s cold and your breathing is slow, keep going, you’ll live”). With the five tracks on "Godspeed," Young Culture have constructed another unforgettable release. "GODSPEED" WILL BE RELEASED THIS FRIDAY, JULY 30TH, 2021.
