Back in 2018, All Ears Avow released an EP titled “Skin & Bones,” a release I found memorable and enjoyable. A few years later, the group have followed it up with their latest EP, “Feel The Push.”
“Technophobia” feels very fitting as an opener (and would be a great choice to open the band’s live set with as well). From the punchy drums and catchy riffs in the intro to the huge chorus and its phenomenal vocal performance, the song feels very anthemic and starts the EP off on quite a strong note. “Hero” brings some catchy guitar and synth leads in the beginning and has lots of energy throughout. Paramore was mentioned as a “for fans of” reference for this band, and between those aforementioned musical elements and the hook-filled choruses, this track in particular definitely feels reminiscent of many of the songs off of “After Laughter.” “L.O.V.E.” is a pretty riff-driven track, and although it definitely combines the band’s pop and rock influences, it leans more towards the rock side and focuses on that aspect of their sound a bit more. Additionally, the track has some really captivating vocals, and has one of the strongest vocal performances on the whole album. “Body Move” is a brief, synth-centric interlude that perfectly transitions into the following track, “Crumble.” The intro and chorus are more hard-hitting compared to the verses, where simple, plucked lead guitars, layered vocals, and striking drums gradually build up to those bigger sections. That aforementioned chorus contains a very emotive performance over relatable lyrics (“There’s something inside of me coming awake / Don’t want to watch it all crumble away”). “Asleep At The Wheel” begins being primarily led by piano and bass before the lead guitars and drums join in, building up the song to its choruses. From start to finish, the track fuses the band’s pop and rock influences together very well. Up next is “Lost Our Heads.” The drums and guitars really stood out in the mix on this one, especially in bigger sections like the chorus, which is yet another anthemic chorus from the EP. The EP’s penultimate track, “Be That Nothing,” brings unforgettable hooks early on, reintroduces some of the poppier influences that were implemented in earlier tracks, and offers another impressive vocal performance. “Feel The Push,” the closer, feels very similar to “Crumble” in the sense that it brings a contrast between a bigger intro and a softer verse. The song then gradually crescendos in volume in preparation for yet another massive chorus that does a stellar job of capturing so much raw emotion. Overall, this track makes a powerful conclusion for the EP. All Ears Avow’s sound has felt unique and stood out to me within this music scene, and the tracks on this EP all do a fantastic job at displaying their various influences and showcasing what makes them stand out so much in the first place.
