Kent, UK-based band Seek Harbour have gained a lot of recognition, accumulating just above 198,000 streams on Spotify and 133,000 music video views on YouTube (at the time of writing this review) within their first couple of years as a band. After spending those first couple of years releasing a cover and a handful of original singles, the group have finally dropped their debut EP, "Far From Home."
The EP opens with “Dagger Like Eyes,” bringing fantastic vocals and guitar riffs instantly in the intro and subsequent first verse. The pre-chorus and chorus show a contrast between heavier and more melodic vocals, and that chorus in particular adds quite a bit of energy to the track.
“Wolves” provides a memorable vocal hook in the intro during the lyrics “To the wolves at my door, you’re just not welcome anymore. ‘Cause it’s too late to pretend that - there’s something here worth anything at all.” The verses bring a contrast between the harsher vocals and cleaner guitars, treading the waters of melodic hardcore before the anthemic choruses kick in, bringing back that hook heard at the beginning and displaying it through another impressive performance. “Far From Home” starts with synths before most of the instrumentals and the vocals join in, and those vocals really shine on here, offering up some very catchy melodies. The second verse contrasts, with more aggressive vocals compared to verse one. Lyrically, the song discusses the pain of ending a relationship, even if that was the right decision in the long run and the relationship wasn’t meant to be in the end (“Knowing I should set you free. Praying that you’ll walk out on your own. I can see the city from up here: but never have I felt so far from home”). The outro really stands out, perfectly capturing a lot of that emotion in the vocal and instrumental performances. “TY (FBMH)” begins with piano before the drums, bass, and some subtle electric guitars are added in to prepare for the chorus. The guitar solo is very catchy, and heavier vocals are added in here and there, bringing extra emotion to the song. The lyrics discuss the fear of inevitably losing a loved one, but also show gratitude towards them for raising you and helping you become the person you are today (“How will I climb mountains without you by my side? Say I’ll be fine, listen and offer a smile / Finding it hard to speak, it kills me knowing there’ll come a time you won’t hear the line, thank you for bringing me here”). It’s a very poignant track and closes the EP out beautifully. On “Far From Home,” Seek Harbour show their unique take on the post-hardcore genre through emotive performances, and as a whole, these four tracks create a phenomenal EP.
