Following 2017's "Morning Approaches," Second To Safety have released their sophomore record, "Esther."
The album begins with “Signs Of Life,” which brings some cleaner guitars and overall softer instrumentation, as well as showing off the vocals and the catchy melodies they deliver. A handful of moments on this record bring a ton of energy to it, beginning with the second track, “Draw The Blinds,” which brings some impressive instrumentals and is a lot more upbeat in comparison to the track prior to it. The vocals on this one really shine as well during the softer verses, where acoustic guitar and drums continue to drive the upbeat rhythm before a bigger pre-chorus and chorus with more raw vocals and harder hitting instrumentals. “To Be Beautiful” is probably the most energetic track on the album, instantly bringing that energy, as well as some very memorable melodies.
In contrast, some songs start out a little differently before bringing some more energy to the table. “Monachopsis” and “August 2004” start out on the softer side, but eventually become more energetic and aggressive at some points, showing the heavier tendencies in this band’s sound. “Esther” is another song with some really good dynamics, from the instrumental intro to the harder hitting and emotional sections later on in the track. The closing track “Copperhead” has dynamics that are just as good and brings a ton of variety. Between the softer intro to the catchy melodic sections and the more aggressive or harder hitting sections that bring some darker composition, the song combines a wide range of musical elements and shows the various elements from throughout the whole record. Amidst all of these are a couple of shorter interludes - the slower and purely instrumental “Alone” and the second-to-last track “I Am Ralph Waldo Emerson. Descending From Moksha,” which, in contrast, shows off the vocals, especially when the harmonies come in throughout the track and really add more to the overall vocal performances on it. “Esther” brings a variety of influences and some pretty memorable and impressive moments throughout its nine tracks, and overall is a pretty interesting record.
