Parting Gift have released their debut EP, titled "Ensom."
Parting Gift are one of a few bands that are doing something a little bit different in the rock and post-hardcore genres. While this band’s music does have some harder hitting elements (a bit similarly to other post-hardcore bands), their overall sound is a bit more laid-back in terms of both the vocals and instrumentals.
“Pale” brings lots of energy right from the start, immediately showing the band’s more aggressive tendencies. The melodies are pretty catchy and the same goes for the guitar riffs echoing during the chorus before the faster paced instrumentals return to drive the second verse. “3:07 (Moonlight)” is a pretty big change of pace at first, being softer both vocally and instrumentally for a bit. The huge chorus is where the instrumentals really kick in, and the vocals show off during the second verse. The track in the middle of the EP is second single “Without Sin,” and throughout its almost six minute duration. Once again, the instrumentals are on the softer side at first, before the bass and drums kick in and add more to the intro, making it a lot bigger, and the echoing vocals really fit with the more atmospheric vibe of this track. The melodies delivered in the chorus are great, and that chorus is louder and more anthemic, which really helps elevate the track. “Cold” has a dark intro that quickly drew me in, and the drums added in later bring more drama as the vocals and guitars echo throughout the track until it fades out. “Ensom” finishes out the EP and is easily one of the strongest tracks on it. The song begins with a big, hard hitting intro, followed by one of the best vocal performances on the whole thing opens the song up, hitting some higher notes that really impressed me. Both the vocals and instrumentals are really at their strongest on this track and it shows clearly throughout its entirety. I’ve already mentioned that this band stands out in the scene of music that they’re in, and their debut EP is further proof of why. The band mixes harder hitting and slightly more aggressive elements with more melodic and atmospheric moments across these five tracks, making “Ensom” an entrancing and interesting release.
