REVIEWS
Happy. have released their debut album, titled “Cult Classic.” The album opens on a pretty interesting note with the opening track “How To Lose A Girl In 1:45.” It starts out a bit slower but unexpectedly picks up the pace as energetic instrumentation drives the upbeat rhythm. The following three tracks are three of the four singles from this record. “Don’t Overdose And Drive” and “I Call Shotgun” are two extremely catchy tracks with really memorable hooks and choruses, while “Winona Ryder” is a bit of a darker track, and the one that really got me hooked on this band’s music in the first place.
“Drowners” seemed like more of a ballad at first, being a bit slower and softer, but it builds up later on in the verse and especially during the pre-chorus, leading to a huge chorus. “Lucky” is pretty impressive in the instrumental department, from the bass and drums driving the rhythm to the great guitar solo. Following that is one of my favorite tracks, “With A Y,” one that starts out slow but changes tempo during its extremely catchy chorus that wouldn’t get out of my head from the moment I heard it. “Fishtank” isn’t too dark, nor is it too happy sounding; it seems to be somewhere in the middle and brings some interesting composition. Another song that does the same is the following track, “Wonder,” one that seems to be the real ballad of the record. The album closes out with “Where The Wild Things Were,” a darker and more punk influenced track that brings some more great performances all around, from the intriguing vocal melodies to more impressive instrumentals. Overall, I really enjoyed this record. After hearing the singles, I instantly became a fan of this band’s music and this album did not disappoint.
