After dropping a handful of singles over the course of 2020, Crossing I’s Dotting T’s have just recently released their self-titled debut EP.
“Dissatisfied” kicks things off, instantly showing the pop-punk aspects of the band’s sound through the catchy guitar riffs that drive the song’s upbeat rhythm. The raspy vocal tone highlights more of the punk side, and contemplative lyrics such as “I’m scared to live my life but I think I’m more terrified to die” foreshadow one of the EP’s overall themes - loss and the inevitability of death. “Regret Stained Memories” slows the tempo down a little bit, and the emo influences really bleed through on this one with the raw emotion found in the vocal performances (particularly during the chorus). The song contains even more introspective lyrics (such as “Locked away inside my room, I’m contemplating everything I once knew / I don’t want to live the way you do, regret stained memories that you hold onto”), which circles back to the topic of self-reflection and questioning things after the loss of a loved one. “See You At Your Funeral” encapsulates a lot of the various musical styles shown on this EP as a whole, from the pieces of pop-punk and emo leading the intro and verses to the elements of grunge and alternative rock that resides within the chorus, and it shows listeners what they can expect from this EP in regards to its sound. The lyrics focus a lot more on the topic of grief and some of the many thoughts and feelings a person may have after the passing of someone close to them (“Now you’re gone, what can I do? / I sit around and stare at pictures of you/ The metaphors have all been used, I wrote this song to say I miss you”). Between lyrics like those and the extremely catchy riffs and melodies throughout the track, it’s clear why this one was chosen as the lead single. The closing track, “7:45 A.M.,” begins with acoustic guitar and vocals, with the bass and drums subtly joining in shortly thereafter. The harder-hitting guitars join in not much later, bringing back the elements of grunge and alternative rock shows a bit during the previous track, and mixing those with the emo influences heard at the beginning. The self-titled EP from Crossing I’s Dotting T’s contains reflective, relatable lyrics and emotive performances, and as a whole, it’s a magnificent release from the band.
