Following the release of their 2019 debut EP “This Is Havelocke,” Havelocke has returned with their sophomore effort, titled “Arsonist.”
“After Dark” begins with darker guitar riffs that really set the tone for the song (and the EP as a whole) and those guitars accompany the vocals that come in shortly after. The drums build the song up to its huge chorus, which contains a gripping vocal performance that combines cleans and screams. The tempo speeds up a bit during the bridge, and the outro of the song seamlessly transitions into the following track, “Vampire Eyes.” A dramatic and hard-hitting intro precedes faster-paced instrumentals and attention-grabbing vocals (which are especially prominent in the song’s charismatic chorus).
The EP’s technical title track - “The Arsonist” - is a bit similar to the track before it, from the eerie intro to the lively instrumentals and fascinating vocals that carry the tune. Shouted vocals deliver an attention-grabbing performance during the bridge, and the instrumentals quickly pick up the pace shortly thereafter to prepare for the song’s final chorus. “100 Seconds” begins with an emotive vocal performance that leads up to a more melodic chorus with some of the catchiest instrumentals and melodies found on the whole EP. The bridge is on the more aggressive side, with harsher vocals and harder-hitting instrumentals that precede the song’s conclusion. The EP closes with “Where We Go,” a track that showcases the band’s punk influences right from the start. Between the captivating vocals and the bursts of energy that the instrumentation delivers throughout the song, it makes a great closing track. “Arsonist” contains five impressive tracks and as a whole, it’s another incredible release from Havelocke.
