Brent Walsh has released his latest EP, titled “Are You Even There At All?” The impressive opening track “Moon Creep” is one of quite a few on here that shows Walsh’s talent as a vocalist, as he performs the majority of the track almost entirely acapella and his voice is the main thing driving it. “Cloud’s Song” seems to show more singer-songwriter influences, as it’s primarily led by just vocals and guitar with some pretty simple acoustic guitar parts. The songwriting on here is what really stands out about the track; I love the way he seems to tell a story and paint a metaphorical picture with the lyrics, and it shows well through the performance. “More Lucky Than This” shows similar influences, but mixes in some cleaner electric guitars with the acoustic guitar, which delivers some interesting guitar parts. The vocal performance is great on this one as well, and I feel like this is another track that really shows off his voice.
“Alone But Contently” is a piano led interlude with some darker notes and chords added in that make the composition more interesting and engaging. While this track is pretty short, the composition still makes it pretty unique. “The Way You Seem” is a major standout as far as influences and the overall sound go. The song incorporates some synths and electronic drums and shows more R&B and hip hop influences with the pop leaning melodies and rapping added into the vocal performance. The EP ends with the incredible closer “Confession Repentance.” It starts off acoustically led, similar to a couple of the other tracks on this EP, but Brent adds plenty of emphasis to it, especially with the vocals. The song as a whole has some great dynamics not only with those vocals, but also in the instrumentals. There’s one section of the song that’s only instrumental, led by a soft acoustic guitar and beautiful piano, building up to a huge bridge, and the subtle orchestral elements towards the end fit the song perfectly. Overall, I really liked this EP. I love how it incorporates so many different influences and styles of music, showing the various different side of Brent Walsh as an artist.
