A few months later, they began hinting that they would be releasing a new single. That single, titled “Father,” was released today. Read what the band had to say about the single below: ”This is a song that holds a lot of weight and a lot of meaning for most of us in the band. It talks about wanting better for those who come after you, family, friends, than what you’ve had. It talks about personal growth and the need to constantly better yourself. We recently left our label and this is our first time “venturing out on our own”. So your support right now means more than it ever has. This is a Northshore you didn’t know existed and I’m excited to show you what we’ve been working on and how we’re moving forward into 2018. Cheers.” -via Instagram, Instagram.com/nrthshre You can watch the music video for “Father” on YouTube. FFO: Trash Boat, Like Pacific, Such A Mess Credit: Daniel Hadfield Rarity, hailing from Hamilton, Canada have announced something special at Supercrawl. They're releasing a new album which will come sometime in 2018. Below is an interview w/ Rarity, what they've been up to, and special details on the album. So, there's been a bit of a hiatus for the past 6 months or so. Since then, has Rarity been working on anything in that time span?
Oh for sure, we’ve been writing a record. It’s all we’ve been doing for the past 6 months. The band hit a sort of rough patch on our way out of 2016. There were only 3 of us and we didn't really know how to come back from it. We decided new music was the answer and for a while we didn't have the courage to commit to anything. Our confidence had been shaken and it wasn't until we finished this one very specific song that we sort of came back to life. We’re very thankful to have had that time off to put ourselves back together. With a new guitarist becoming part of Rarity, has this new addition been super helpful to you guys? Aha oh yea. Corbin has been a long time friend of the band. He was there through all our biggest accomplishments. We’ve always supported everything he's done musically and he has always returned the favour. He filled in for us on a tour about a year ago, and once we were in the thick of writing he always seemed to be around. We’d ask him “what do you think of this?” or “what do you think would work here?” and he'd always know exactly what to say. It just made sense to bring him in for real. I've heard that there's news of a new album in the works. Is there any information you’d like to disclose on the album? There’s not much we can say except that we are going to record it this October with Sam Guaiana. The songs do have a bleakness and a sometimes spooky vibe that I think is a very cool texture, especially since we’ll be recording them over Halloween. They're harsh and punchy in that classic Rarity way, but I think we did a better job writing the songs this time around. We blended our influences a bit more cohesively. All of us are literally counting the seconds until we can hold it in our hands. Are there possible plans of touring with this album? If so, do you have anyone in mind you'd tour with? Absolutely! We want to play these songs live! Europe and the UK have been in our crosshairs for some time now. We just miss our friends you know? Any shows with Boston Manor, Like Pacific, BAAO, Seaway or Silverstein would be a riot. Will the album differ from past music you've created? If so, how will it differ? Yea I think so. Every band evolves a bit when they have to make a new record. The members are listening to different artists, the producers change. I think the worst thing a band can do is put out the same record over and over again. Bands need to take risks. With that said, I do think we honed in the I Couldn’t Be Weaker sound a bit. We took our favourite moments from that record and thought about what we weren’t able to say or do on it. It’s all about moving forward, not erasing the history our band has worked so hard to create. Do you believe Rarity’s sound and progression has changed effectively? If so, how? I mean I like to think it’s changed in a more flattering way? Aha. We’re older now. We think about things differently. We know what we want and we’re making steps to achieve that. We’ve always been a bunch of moody guys making punk songs with a pop-sensibility. We tread dangerously over that line every time we write a song. What’s exciting is seeing what new ideas come from that process. We don't ever want to do something that pushes us back into the grey or makes us blend in. If anything’s going to be different about this record, its going to be that we know our strengths and we’re writing songs to accent those strengths. How has your writing process changed overtime? Like I said earlier, at the end of 2016 it was the 3 of us and our confidence was shaken. We thought “how are we going to make up for what they brought to the songs”. That was the wrong way to think about it. It only held us back. Once we got into the thick of it we were discovering that we shared a very common vision of the band and the music we made. That’s what brought us out of our slump. We energized each other. It still took a while to feel confident again, but its good to feel like we’re on top again. the confidence is back. We still write songs the same: sometimes it comes from a drum idea, sometimes a guitar riff. Our drummer Evan actually learned a lot of guitar over the past year trying to be a bigger part of that half of the writing. It became a lot less of “the guitarists write the guitar, the drummer writes the drums…”. With the 3 of us and now 4 of us, it became more like song writing pow-wows aha. A lot of the music began as acoustic songs, and I think thats really cool. Since your album release of “I Couldn't Be Weaker,” has it changed your career in any way? 100% it has. We have connected with people all across the world because of that album. And thats why we do it. Our family gets bigger and bigger each day and that’s amazing. We’ve played huge shows and very personal shows and we couldn’t have asked for more. We’re excited to release a new record and keep the Rarity train chugging along! Do you have a favorite specific song you’ve written? If so, why? Yea actually, that first song that gave us the confidence to write the rest of the album. It’s my favourite song we’ve ever written. It has a lot of sentimental value and plus it bangs hard. We were staying in this small town in Quebec last year. It was right on a lake and super romantic. We walked around at sunset and found food together in a place that spoke no English. We hung out all night and started writing the beginnings of the song that would eventually spearhead this new record for us. So yea, that’s my favourite Rarity song. Finally, what can people expect from Rarity in the future? TOURS. A NEW RECORD. MAYBE PICTURES OF US? WE’LL DEF SHOW YOU WHAT IT WAS LIKE RECORDING THE RECORD. ADAM WILL BUY SHOES. EVAN WILL EAT BURRITOS. LOEDEN WONT EAT MOST THINGS ON A HAMBURGER. ITS A GOOD TIME TO BE RARITY I TELL YA. MUSIC MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND. HOW GOOD IS THE OFFICE? MAN!
