INTERVIEWS
INTERVIEW BY: MegYou’ve had quite a bit of experience in the music industry prior to releasing music under Kulick. How has that experienced helped you with this project? I worked in a few recording studios while going to college at the Art Institute of Philadelphia which really helped me learn how to record my music and produce. After that,I worked in radio at CBS as a broadcast engineer, so I was able to learn how radio programming works and also see how artists conducted themselves when they visited the stations. Last year you released your EP “Hydroplane.” How has that release had an impact on your career since it came out? Hydroplane was the first release I had that people started really falling in love with the songs. I released a lot of music before "Kulick" under my full name, but this first release was a major stepping stone. Especially Ghost, Hole in My Head, and Colors. I was also happy that I was able to keep some of my more organic sound on the EP, like the song Hydroplane. With this EP we were able to get an acoustic tour with Sleeping with Sirens and also a tour with Andy Black this past spring. More recently, you released a new single titled “Scatterbrain.” What exactly is the song about and what kind of message or theme are you trying to portray/get across to the listeners? For me personally, Scatterbrain is a song about not giving all of your creative rights away. Its about not changing everything about yourself because of the pressures of society. Choosing which aspects you are comfortable with altering and which ones are true to yourself. However, I have had many other meanings told to me from fans that I love. Thats whats amazing about music; it is art and should be viewed from everyones self perspective. How does that single compare to your previous releases, both musically and lyrically? Scatterbrain I am honestly the most proud of. Since starting music, I have always wanted to be the "do it all" kind of artist, where I write the song, record it, produce it, and so on. This was the first song that I had my hands all over. I co-wrote it with our keys player April Gabrielli in New York about being frustrated with the ins and outs of the music business, and I took it home to produce it out. I feel very fulfilled with being able to record everything and produce it myself, and plan to do this as much as possible. I also like working with other producers, but it is a very different situation and fulfillment. So to answer the question, it was completely different musically AND lyrically. Are you working on any new music currently and if so, how is it coming along? Can people expect more singles, another EP, or even a full-length in the near future? I am writing as many songs as my heart can pour out. I have so much going on right now in my personal life and love life that I can't write as fast as my mind is spinning - it is a good time creatively at least, haha. I am hoping to get together an EP or a Full Length by the fall, fingers crossed. In the spring, you went on tour supporting Andy Black. How was that tour and what was it like touring with him and the other acts on the lineup? The tour was amazing. It was our first full band tour, and we performed above my expectations. The songs connected with the fans, and we made and met a lot of new fans. I loved seeing some people in the crowd know the words to some of our songs too. Andy was a private person who said genuinely nice things about our set every night, in person and on stage to the crowd. We also loved hanging out with The Faim and their music. I actually got to sing "Make Believe" with them on the last show, and Josh joined us for "Colors." We are trying to get some type of writing session/tour together with them in the future. Any particular memories from the tour that you’d like to share? Honestly tour is such a blur, and always is. I mostly remember the stressful situations so I'll share one of those. We bought a van to tour in. Literally day 2 of driving, and the steering column went, so we were stuck in Omaha, NE for a few days just waiting for that to get fixed. Then a few weeks later, we were visiting Fender headquarters and when someone went to shut the sliding side door, it broke the latch and would not shut. We had to drive to a dealership while Jerome held the door shut, which was nice and sketchy. So basically just van trouble. (The side door also doesn't stay shut and is still a problem, haha). With a tour done and a new single out, what’s next for Kulick and what else can people expect from you in the future? I am writing songs with everyone in the band as much as I can in the hopes of making an EP or Full Length. We are also looking for a tour for the fall. New music is definitely being written, and its more emotional and real than ever, so if you like the Hydroplane EP, I think you will be in for a treat.
