This past summer, Bukowski released their debut EP "Grow Up. Give Up. Let Go." In this exclusive track-by-track, vocalist/guitarist James gives an inside look on how each song on the EP came to be. 1. Title
This riff has been around since I was in about year 9/10 (2005ish?) I always wanted to make it a full song but it never got further than a riff. When we decided to put the release together, we wanted a title track but couldn't think of anything, I showed the guys and they dug the riff and the small track was born. As far as the meaning, we wanted the EP tied together from start to finish, so as we were jamming “Title,” the line 'did you ever really care' popped into my head, which kind of was a nice rounding out question to the lyrics I had already penned. 2. Twothousandseven This song was demoed at my parents house one afternoon. I was just chilling on the couch while watching the footy with my dad and he was asking me how music and life were going. I gave him some generic answer like “yeah, it's good” and smiled. Then I just started noodling and the intro riff came out and I just started humming a melody, and I was like “Hey this might be something...” I went into my old bedroom, and just started writing, thinking back to what my dad asked just about how life was going and I was just like “Damn, I really haven't achieved much since high school.” It was kind of a cathartic process which happened so quickly. I recorded it on my phone and messaged Benji saying “Yo, I think I have a song.” I left my parents, raced straight over and payed it down and Benji was just like “Man, this is totally me, but like 2006.” 3. Grow Up. Give Up. Let Go. This song kinda came about in similar fashion of 2007. I was just noodling at my parents’ and had the chords and started humming a melody. In regards to the lyrics and the meaning, I had been through a pretty rough break up a year or so before and I was just thinking about how that ended. I was just thinking “Man, I'm kinda glad that I'm where I am now but god damn I was a massive jerk in the end of that relationship.” It's a song written from the perspective of an ex-girlfriend who tried everything to hold together a relationship but me just running in the complete opposite direction. 4. Brood This one came together in the jam room, I think G started playing the straight beat and I just began noodling with open chords and I was just like “Man, this is super emo! This is sick!” One morning I woke up kinda hungover and I was making breakfast with my beautiful girlfriend and these lyrics just started flowing out (don’t know where they came from) I was just writing and writing.. I feel like it was about an old friend of mine who was a mad party animal but when she had a bit too much to drink, things just got too intense. I think that's where it spawned from, just wanting to plead with someone to chill but they have their own battles to fight and figure out and no matter how hard you try you can't change anyone if they don't want to change. 5. You’re Probably Gonna Hate This This was one of the oldest songs we had for the EP. Benji and I had began writing a bunch of songs back in mid 2014, and just had this idea and we really liked it so we scrapped all the others and kept this one, re-worked a bit and it is what it is. In regards to the meaning, it's about an ex who in the end wasn't the person I thought she was. As far as the title, I was sitting with Benji after we finished it and I was like “Damn, this is brutal; she would hate this if she heard it,'” so we named it “You’re Probably Gonna Hate This.”
